While the standard policies are defined, consequences for not following the institution’s code of conduct and acting dishonestly are often not carried out. Why? Well, one of the reasons is that it takes work. Another reason is that faculty don’t necessarily know that their students are cheating, and if they find out, they often don’t know how to handle it, so they choose not to follow the established procedures.
